Task 3: Success stories D1(U24)

Learning outcome 1 (U24): Understand the products that are produced within and across media industries

D1 (U24): Discuss how successful media concepts have been positively exploited across multiple media industries.

Netflix

Netflix’s original business origin was to sell a mailing services with DVD rentals in 1997 but in 2007 Netflix changed and went to streaming services from that customer where able watch shows from online with Netflix realising their own shows as well as movies and TVs that have already been realised. It costs £4.99 a month for one device but £9.99 for multiple. The services are useable on lots of different devices for example smartphones, smart TVs, laptops, tablets and consoles.

Netflix now has done a partnership with a sky that now customers with a sky Q account can watch all original Netflix shows within Sky without having a Netflix account or with having a Netflix account as they would be able to connect it to the sky Q account as well. This would reach more audiences as it means that customers that don’t have Netflix are able to watch their shows if they are part of Sky giving more access to the customers that don’t have the chance. This shows that Netflix is trying to reach different target audience and they want to make sure they can stay relevant in the streaming sites as they are the ones that are at the top to make sure that the audiences are keeping interested in their brand.

From the statistics of Netflix’s streaming services, you can see that over the years of 2012 to 2015 then it has raised from 26.5 million subscribers to 69.1millions subscribers across both US and international. The reason for them to gain such an increase of active subscribers is because their content and services had upgraded through being able to have 5 profiles on one Netflix account this meant that each account would get their own sort recommendations through the Netflix algorithm making sure each user receives individualized suggestions and adding favourites individually.  This system is used to make sure that the customers are wanting to watch more shows on Netflix.

Netflix also use email to make sure that they reach different audiences this would be done through when somebody would sign up for the subscription that would have to put in their emails. Netflix would then use this to send them promotional emails telling them about new shows that have come out and what is already out that they can watch. The way this would reach different audiences is from the new shows that they release from their original content, for example, push the choose your own story this would be advertised through emails and even through social media making sure they get all the different audience to see it.

The content available to all the different customers on Netflix would go through having sections just set for kids so that when kids are going through Netflix it would only have the appropriate shows and movies that kids are allowed to watch. This helps Netflix get the younger audiences as well as the parents of the kids this is because its similar to like parent lock making sure when the parents give kids the chance to watch something on Netflix they can scroll through all of it without the parents worrying if they come up to something inappropriate.

They also have sections for films documentaries, TVs and lots more different genres between. This helps to attract a wide range of customers. This would be because when searching through the services there are multiple different shows to watch from giving the audience a very big choice of things to watch. It would also add to the fact that they have there own featured shows on Netflix making it very limited for the customers.

Netflix is also able to personalise a customers account very well. This would be done through when somebody is watching a show and completes it that customer would get recommendations as to what they should watch next due to them complete that show. This helps to make customers feel more personal with their Netflix creating a better bond with it. It would also give the customers a percentage as to how much the match would be if they would like the show. So every customer would have a very different account making the audience a lot more connected with their Netflix.

They also have different mini accounts that are under the main account so that gives a lot more personalization to be further within the account. This would be done when creating the main account the customers are able to make different mini-profiles for everyone that uses the account. This would make the customers feel more personal with their Netflix account as it means they are completely one to one if they are using it.

Another way that Netflix notifies you is through using the apps on smartphones and tablets. This is when Netflix would have a new show that they think that their customers might like so it sends the customers a pop-up notification if they have the app. This would appeal to customers that watch shows on the go and helps to make sure that the customers are still using Netflix to give them a quick reminder as to what they can also watch.

Netflix has lots of different ways as to how they would advertise their brand. A lot of the time it would be done through social media and sometimes billboards, newspaper articles these would be mainly for the older audience when the social media is for the younger audience and posters. They would sometimes have a campaign for their advertisement for a show that they just create for example stranger things when season 2 came out they did a lot of promotional advertisement through central London making customers more aware of it. But then they have other methods that are a lot of subtler advertisement when it’s a smaller programme they are advertising.

Overall, the media concept Netflix has been positively exploited across multiple media, industries to make sure that the customers are able to have a personalised experience with their services making sure that they feel as if it is their Netflix and everyone else are different from them. It also made sure that they are more convenient for the customers so they are able to watch their shows as soon as they can.

Amazon
Amazons original business selling point was to sell books but over the years they went to a premium package services that sell multiple different things. Amazon was founded in 1994 and started selling music and videos in 1998 which at this time was then started selling online books in The UK. Amazon is accessible mostly all over the world. They have an amazon prime which gives the customers a chance to use there streaming services as well as one-day delivery services or even the same day delivery this would cost £79 upfront for a whole year meaning its £6.58 per month this would include all the services.  Amazon is available on smartphones and tablets and on laptops.
On Amazon, they have lots of different content available online for lots of different audiences. They have books, videos games and a streaming service, they would be the main target for the customers that have things on the most recent searched or most recent looked at as they would be able to know that a customer was looking at some books that they might want to look at other books like that one.

On this graph, you can see how the rise of revenue for Amazon started rising in 2006. This would be because they upgraded their website to be a lot smarter for the customers and on that same year they started the Fulfilment by Amazon which managed the storage of individuals and small companies selling their items through there amazons’ website.  This gave customers a lot more products to choose from not just being amazon selling to them but lots of other ones as well.

The brand is accessible through lots of different platforms for example, they have smartphone apps that customers can download, as well as being able to use the web browser on tables computers smartphones and smart TVs. They reason for Amazon to have an application is because it’s a lot more convenient regular customers that want to purchase from them or use the streaming services. The reason why this is successful for Amazon is that its less time for customers to try and use web browsers when they can use an app which would take much less time to start up and use. The reason why they use this is that we have the technology to be able to do it and it doesn’t cost as much so its very cheap and easy to do.

Different audiences are reached through there different advertising with their premium services. One method of advertising that Amazon does is pop up ads on different web browsers throughout lots of different things. They are also targeted through the customer's cookies, so they know what they have been looking at so they can show products that protentional customers want to get. This would target different audiences because Amazon is advertising specific products or shows to the customers previous looks making it more specified and this means it's going to lots of different audiences.

Amazon also makes exclusive called amazon originals these are the show's that only the customers with prime can watch it. A lot of these shows would have celebrities within them using the celebrity endorsement so that celebrity would go on to the shows and then they would promote to all their fans to get prime so they can watch this new show they are in. this would get different audiences as the celebrity would already have a following so that following would get the prime.
